Sunridge Middle School students had their annual Pow Wow on Thursday, November 29, in recognition of Native American Heritage Month. The event was organized by Janet Maddern, Title VI Indian Education teacher, and Thomas Morning Owl was the emcee. A total of 22 SMS students, 6th through 8th graders, danced. Nixya'awii drummers and dancers also participated. Chief Donald Sampson spoke, and many special guests attended.
Sunridge students also made a special presentation to honor Peo Peo Mox Mox, Chief of the Walla Walla tribe. Born in 1933 on the Tutuilla Flats, Mox Mox attended Pendleton High School and served for many years on the Umatilla Tribes' Board of Trustees and as Chairman of the General Council.
“Our Native American students, along with their teacher, Mrs. Maddern, did an outstanding job of organizing the Pow Wow. The Pow Wow is a great event -- it showcases many of our students and presents relevant and historical information to our entire Sunridge family," said Dave Williams, Principal of Sunridge.
