Superintendent Message – July 29, 2020

It has been a while since I last communicated with all of you, but we are at a point that we need to communicate plans for the 2020-2021 school year.  Since June 10th, our staff has been using guidance from the Oregon Department of Education, the Oregon Health Authority, and Governor Brown to reopen schools this fall.  Throughout the process, there have been two new executive orders issued by Governor Brown and multiple revisions to the guidance from ODE/OHA for opening schools.  It was my goal to have students back in buildings to start the year provided we could do so safely for both students and our staff within the guidance provided.  We have in fact looked at two draft plans to accomplish our goal.

Those attempts officially ended yesterday when the governor announced health metric requirements in order for students to return to classrooms this fall.  The Pendleton School District will begin the school year using a Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) model for all students K-12.   What this means is that students will log in to classes and lessons from home to receive their education.  Although our plan details will be released within the next 7-10 days, here is what you should expect for the beginning of the school year:

  1. Communication from your student’s school regarding class schedules, Chromebooks, etc, by August 10th,
  2. All students will be issued a Chromebook in order to participate; multiple students in the same household will each have a device,
  3. There will be a combination of daily teacher-led learning lessons and some “applied” learning that students should be able to complete independently,
  4. There should be minimum reliance on parents except to ensure that students maintain a regular routine, provide adequate space to complete lessons, and maintain Chromebooks in working order,
  5. Students will have a daily schedule or routine, Monday thru Friday, following the adopted school calendar, and
  6. Supports and additional services will be provided for those who require it.

Our plan, when finalized, will start under the broad conditions listed above and gradually return students to our buildings when the metrics allow us to safely do so.

Please be looking for something from your child’s school the week of August 10th with school-specific details.

Please be assured that I have heard you and our plans moving forward in this model will be teacher-centric.  Parents will not be asked to assume the role of the teacher in this model.

You can expect more updates from me over the next week.  I appreciate your patience during these challenging times and wish that I could have provided you with better news for the upcoming school year.

Respectfully,
Chris Fritsch

Respectfully,
Chris Fritsch
